Werner's Nomenclature of Colours
110 named colors from the 1814 Edinburgh edition by the flower painter Patrick Syme, built on the mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner's scheme. Each color is identified by examples from the animal, vegetable and mineral kingdoms.
About these colors
Werner's Nomenclature of Colours was published in Edinburgh in 1814 by Patrick Syme (1774–1845), extending the mineral color scheme of Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749–1817). The book and its text are in the public domain.
Hex values are averages sampled from scans of the hand-painted swatches in the 1821 second edition, so they approximate two centuries of aged paper rather than the original pigments. They come from Graphics::ColorNames::Werner by Robert Rothenberg (CC0), which takes them from Nicholas Rougeux's online edition. The animal, vegetable and mineral examples are transcribed from the book.
